The Company
ArrayXpress is a laboratory services company that designs, produces
and analyzes microarrays. As microarray technology exploded onto the
scene in recent years, the need for quality-driven service providers
in the industry became apparent. ArrayXpress was founded with the
vision of providing a complete solution for anyone needing to utilize
microarrays in diagnostics and other research to identify genes regulating
phenotypic traits of interest.
The company uses its patented methods and techniques to generate the
highest quality microarray data and results available in the industry
– all at a lower cost than otherwise available. Additionally,
through a strategic relationship with SAS Institute, ArrayXpress is
able to provide an extremely powerful and unparalleled statistical
analysis of the results of its microarray experiments. ArrayXpress
was founded in January 2003 as a Delaware “C” corporation
and maintains its principal place of business in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Management
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer ("CEO") - Michael Zapata III; has significant experience in the management of technology and the establishment and development of technology based companies. Michael's experience includes serving as CEO and Chairman of LIPSinc a DSP software company, involvement in more than a dozen start-ups from the National Science Foundation sponsored TEC Program where he served as Director, Assistant Director then Kenan Fellow at the Kenan Institute of Engineering, Technology, and Science, numerous for profit and non-profit boards, active institutional and private investor in technology start-ups, and a Major and combat aviation officer in the Army National Guard.
Chief Scientific Officer - Leonel M. van Zyl, Ph.D.; is highly accredited in the study and use of microarray technology. Len has over 10 years of experience in studying gene expression and is a professor at NC State University in the Forestry Biotechnology Group of the Department of Forestry. Len received his Ph.D. in Microbiology and Genetics from the University of the Orange Free State in the Republic of South Africa.

Board of Directors
ArrayXpress has five members of its Board of Directors. Internal Directors include Michael Zapata and Len van Zyl. The company currently has the following three external Directors:
Stephen K. Markham, Ph.D.; Director, is an experienced entrepreneur and financial manager who has served as a board member for LIPSinc, LipoScience, and Kyma. Steve is a tenured faculty member in the Department of Business Management at NC State University. He specializes in technology management and product development, and serves on the executive committee of the Product Development and Management Association.
Athanasios (Thanos) Maroglou, Ph.D.; Director, has worked for over 20 years as a senior executive with large and small life science companies. Currently, Dr. Maroglou is Vice President of Business Development of Chimerix, Inc., a drug discovery and development company focused on antiviral drugs. He also is a Board Member for Southeast Techlnventures, Inc. and NIRvana Pharmaceuticals, Inc.
Previously, Dr. Athanasios Maroglou was President and co-founder of Ercole Biotech, Inc., a drug discovery company that develops splice switching drugs and an Associate with A.M. Pappas and Associates, a venture capital company. Prior to Ercole Biotech, Dr. Maroglou was the Vice President of Project Management of Paradigm Genetics, Inc. a functional genomics company that went public in 2000. Spending 14 years with E.I. DuPont DeNemours, Inc., Dr. Maroglou held positions of increasing management responsibility in research, manufacturing, and business. Dr. Athanasios Maroglou earned a B.Sc. and Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Birmingham, UK.
Caroline Popper, MD, MPH; Director, is an experienced biotech board member and corporate officer. Caroline is currently a Senior Vice President of bioMerieux. She is a founder and president of two Florida biotechnology companies and an officer in two others. She has also been the Chief Business Officer of MDS Proteomics and has held a number of VP, GM, and Director positions at Becton Dickinson.
