CEO & Chief Scientific Officer - Len va Zyl, Ph.D: Dr. van Zyl is highly accredited in the study and use of microarray technology. Len has over 10 years of experience in studying gene expression and is a professor at NC State University in the Forestry Biotechnology Group of the Department of Forestry. Len received his Ph.D. in Microbiology and Genetics from the University of the Orange Free State in the Republic of South Africa.

Secretary / Treasurer - Dorcas Stapleton: Mrs. Stapleton has held Director, Controller, Accountant, and Business Manager positions at a number of technology companies including rPath, Intervolve, and MCNC. She holds a Bachelors of Science in Business Administration from Meredith College with advanced courses in business management. Mrs. Stapleton also served on the board of directors of the Triangle Apartment Association.

Business Development - Chris Price, Ph.D: Dr. Price is a serial entrepreneur, inventor, consultant, and educator in life sciences with more than 20 years of senior executive R&D, business development, and management experience in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and specialty chemicals.   Biotechnology companies he led brought 5 medical products into clinical study (one is marketed; the others remain in ongoing clinical studies) and 2 consumer products onto the market.  He created and managed NovaScreen®, an R&D services entity acquired by Caliper in 2006. He has raised more than $110 million of equity and debt and completed a number of licensing deals together worth more than $400 million in licensing fees.  Chris received his PhD in biology from Syracuse University and an MBA from the Sloan School (MIT).  He is an author on 28 peer-reviewed scientific papers and a book on global patent strategy (Wiley, 2007) as well as inventor on 34 U.S. patents.  Current advisory roles include Medical Defense Technologies (developing a critical care product) and OcuSciences (retinal imaging). Chris is a member of the scientific advisory boards of The Endpoint Group (natural products) and ConjuGate, Inc. (injectable therapeutics).

Executive Chairman - Michael Zapata III: Mr. Zapata is the Entrepreneur-in-Residence with the Entreprenurial Initiative at NC State University, Executive Chairman of Protochips, a semiconductor company with applications in real-time electron microscopy, and a Board Member of HueMetrix, an instrumentation company. Michael has served in roles as CMO, President, and CEO of multiple companies. He is a retired LTC and combat aviation officer, having served in the NC Army National Guard.

Technical Team - Our entire laboratory team and the majority of our bioinformatics team members hold Ph.D's in fields including biology, genetics, diagnostics, statistics, database management and computing. Our knowledge base and experience are the strongest capabilities we offer.

 

Board of Directors

ArrayXpress has five members of its Board of Directors. Internal Directors include Michael Zapata and Len van Zyl. The company currently has the following three external Directors:

Stephen K. Markham, Ph.D.; Director, is an experienced entrepreneur and financial manager who has served as a board member for LIPSinc, LipoScience, and Kyma. Steve is a tenured faculty member in the Department of Business Management at NC State University. He specializes in technology management and product development, and serves on the executive committee of the Product Development and Management Association.

Athanasios (Thanos) Maroglou, Ph.D.; Director, has worked for over 20 years as a senior executive with large and small life science companies. Currently, Dr. Maroglou is Vice President of Business Development of Chimerix, Inc., a drug discovery and development company focused on antiviral drugs. He also is a Board Member for Southeast Techlnventures, Inc. and NIRvana Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Previously, Dr. Athanasios Maroglou was President and co-founder of Ercole Biotech, Inc., a drug discovery company that develops splice switching drugs and an Associate with A.M. Pappas and Associates, a venture capital company. Prior to Ercole Biotech, Dr. Maroglou was the Vice President of Project Management of Paradigm Genetics, Inc. a functional genomics company that went public in 2000. Spending 14 years with E.I. DuPont DeNemours, Inc., Dr. Maroglou held positions of increasing management responsibility in research, manufacturing, and business. Dr. Athanasios Maroglou earned a B.Sc. and Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Birmingham, UK.

Caroline Popper, MD, MPH; Director, is an experienced biotech board member and corporate officer. Caroline is currently a Senior Vice President of bioMerieux. She is a founder and president of two Florida biotechnology companies and an officer in two others. She has also been the Chief Business Officer of MDS Proteomics and has held a number of VP, GM, and Director positions at Becton Dickinson.
